My name is Dominik Schmid. I am a German marine biology student and currently completing my third year at James Cook University in Townsville. My time in Australia has been a great one but I have recognized certain mistreatments and the lack of fairness in some parts of our education. That moved me to attend the CISA conference in 2011, when I was first elected as equity officer. Ever since then I try to improve on the misfits in the Australian educational system. I find it quite challenging but rewarding in any possible way. I love to interact and communicate with people from different cultures and acquired strong awareness for different cultures. 

 

I strongly believe that international students should not be treated any different than domestic students. Equality should be guaranteed despite differences in sex, religion, financial situation, sexual orientation and country of origin. Mostly equal rights are granted on paper, but often they are poorly executed. Equity is one of the major areas the australian educational sector will have to work on to be competitive in the long run, but also and primarily to guarantee a positive study experience for the students here and now.
