Good News For International Students But CISA Encourages Caution

The Council of International Students Australia welcomes the changes announced yesterday by the government to the International Student visa process.

“It is very encouraging to see that some of the key areas of concern have been addressed and this is good news for a lot of students and their families as well as the education industry.” said CISA President, Miss Arfa Noor.

The government has announced two year to four year post-study work visa options for university graduates depending on the level of study completed.

“The work experience will add value to Australian qualifications and will certainly be an added incentive for students to choose Australia as a destination for further studies and professional development.” Miss Noor added

However, students who complete their degree from a non-university institute are not considered eligible for this visa.

“This exclusion is rather disappointing.” said Miss Noor

“There is simply no reason why a student who has worked hard to complete an accredited degree should be penalized simply because they chose to do it from a private college or a TAFE."

Universities will also have the added advantage of having their students processed as level 1 applicants, which will cut down the processing time significantly and make it a little less complicated.

"The government should also look at including reputable private colleges and TAFE institutes to this list as well so that their students are not unnecessarily disadvantaged."

All 41 recommendations that were put forward in the Knight review have been accepted by the government including the removal of minimum English language entry qualifications for ELICOS students.

“These changes will certainly help send out a positive message about Australia to prospective students. However, they alone will not bring about sustainable growth. We need to make sure that students have a positive experience while they are here and that the infrastructure keeps pace with the industry.” concluded Miss Noor
